Joseph Ashbury Carpenter was born November 14, 1862 in Bedford Co. TN. to William Shook Carpenter and Mary “Polly” Long . Joseph and Elizabeth were the parents of 5 children: Albert, Joseph, Mary, John, and Amelia (Millie).  
Joseph was one of the first to enlist in Company K of Colonel Allen's regiment during the Civil War.   Joseph died of  March 28, 1862 at Camp Nelson Army Camp near Austin, Lonoke County, AR.  At Joseph’s death his children were 8 years of age and younger.  After Joseph's death Elizabeth married John Benjamin Jeffrey.  They were the parents of 3 children: Annie, Elizabeth, and Margaret.  John was a Primitive Baptist minister.

William Shook Carpenter was born August 1, 1805 in Ohio to Benjamin Carpenter and Amelia Shook.  He married Mary “Polly” Long August 9, 1825.  William and Polly were the parents  of 9 children: Isaac, Andrew, Joseph, Emilia, James, William Wiley, Elizabeth, Mary and John.  

Benjamin Carpenter was born in 1786 in Bedford Co.,TN. He married Amelia Shook from TN in 1803.  Amelia Shook was born January 5, 1786 in Bedford, TN and died April 9, 1855 in TN. They were the parents of 6 children: Mary, William, Elizabeth, Samuel, Jesse, and Sarah.  Benjamin Carpenter "was engaged in boating on the Mississippi River at the time of his death, but his family resided in Indiana at the time.  His widow then removed with her family to Tennessee to her people, where they resided until January 1830 when they came to Jefferson County, where she died.  Perrin's History of Jefferson County, Illinois

William Shook was born January 1, 1745 in Hampshire, VA and died in 1822 in Bedford, TN.  William married Catherine Sears, daughter of James Sears and Sarah Coffman was born in 1746 in Hampshire, VA and died in 1812 in Bedford, TN

James Sears was born January 1, 1720 in Hampshire, VA to William Sears and Sarah Howes and died August 12, 1783 in Hampshire, VA.  He married Sarah Coffman who was born in 1725 in Gloucester, VA.  She died August 12, 1783.  

William Sears was born in 1702 to James Sears and Sarah Richmond in Bristol, MA. He died August 12, 1783 in Gloucester, VA.  He married Sarah Howes who was born June 20, 1699 in Gloucester, VA and died in 1720 in Gloucester, VA.

James Sears was born in 1675 in Taunton, MA. and died January 27, 1733 Bridgewater, MA.  He married Sarah Richmond who was born February 26, 1670 in Taunton, MA and died November 27, 1727 in Taunton, MA
